THE COLOR OF YOUR PLACE

A baby is born. Before she can speak, someone looks at her skin and makes a judgment. “Thank God, she’s fair.” It sounds harmless. It is not.

In India, the color of your skin can shape how you are seen, while your surname can reveal the caste into which you were born. Beauty, marriage, education, work, status and opportunity can all carry the weight of a hierarchy that many inherit before they are old enough to understand it.

For some, the consequences are humiliation and exclusion. For others, they can mean violence, forced labor, lost opportunities, or even death. And for millions, the damage begins somewhere quieter: learning to believe that their own skin is something that should be changed.

The Color of Your Place takes you inside the uncomfortable reality of caste and colorism in India, from ancient ideas of purity and untouchability to British rule, beauty advertising, marriage, education, employment, and the people fighting back.

This is not just history. It is the story of a hierarchy that can still shape lives today.

And once you see it, you may never look at skin, status, or your own place in society the same way again.
