Med Grundloven af 1953 blev Grønlands kolonistatus ophævet, landet blev integreret i Danmark, og grønlænderne blev ligestillede med de øvrige borgere i det danske rige. Denne bog viser, hvordan beslutningen om at ændre Grønlands status både var betinget af ydre og indre forhold.
I FN-sammenhæng følte danskerne det i stigende grad som en belastning at være en kolonimagt, da de frygtede, at FN ville blande sig i forholdene i Grønland. Også de amerikanske militære aktiviteter på Grønland prægede beslutningen om landets integration.
Grønlænderne selv havde længe ønsket sig en modernisering af deres samfund, og fra omkring 1950 var der et voksende grønlandsk krav om ligestilling med danskerne og større indflydelse på egne forhold. Under udfærdigelsen af Grundloven besluttede man i 1952, at Grønland skulle være en ligestillet del af det danske rige i form af rendyrket integration. Ingen ønskede en hjemmestyreordning for Grønland, som den der gjaldt for Færøerne. Enigheden om en rendyrket integration skyldtes bl.a. en række følelsesmæssige og statslige hensyn, der vanskeliggjorde det at kappe båndene til Grønland.
Bogen udgør et vigtigt bidrag i debatten om udviklingen af de dansk-grønlandske relationer i efterkrigstiden. Den kan ses som et vigtigt forsøg på at kaste lys på de mange omstændigheder, der påvirkede ophævelsen af Grønlands koloniale status.

The report presented here provides the most comprehensive account to date of the decolonisation of Greenland’s status in the years 1945-54.
With the Constitution of 1953, the colonial status of Greenland came to an end, and Greenlanders were granted equal rights as citizens within the Danish realm. In 1954 this new arrangement was supported by the UN General Assembly. The decision to change Greenland’s status was conditioned both by internal and external circumstances. In the UN context, Danes increasingly felt the strain of being a colonial power, and they feared the possibility of future UN interference in Greenlandic affairs.
The volume is a significant contribution to the ongoing debates concerning important developments in Danish-Greenlandic relations in the post-war period. It constitutes an important attempt to untangle the many circumstances impinging on the phasing out of Greenland’s colonial status.
