John le Carré (pseudonym for David Cornwell) født 1931, tidligere britisk diplomat og efterretningsagent, har siden 1960'erne repræsenteret det ypperste inden for krimi- og spændingsgenren. Blandt hans kendste bøger er "Spionen der kom ind fra kulden" (filmatiseret med Richard Burton i hovedrollen) og bøgerne med efterretningsofficeren George Smiley (filmatiseret med Alec Guiness i hovedrollen). Han har desuden vundet stor succes med romanerne Den standhaftige gartner og Marionetten. En skrøbelig sandhed, der er forfatterens 23. roman, udkom i 2013. Og romanen Natportieren, der udkom første gang i 1993, blev i 2016 filmatiseret som tv-serie på BBC med Susanne Bier i instruktørstolen.
